Space Encounters: Tate Modern Series

Escalators 1 – 12, 2002

This piece is a 12-part photo sequence showing the escalators at Tate Modern. The images were not chosen at random but were all taken in sequence from one roll of medium format film. Needless to say, that this was not the only role of film that I took.

Turbine Hall 14 – 06 - 02

This is a three part photographic sequence showing the large piazza like entrance area of the Turbine Hall. Hereby I attempted to explore everyday life in the museum by recording the momentary position of visitors within this ordinary space that forms the entrance to one of the most renowned art institutions in Europe.

In suspense, 2002

This piece is part of the Tate Modern series and shows the escalators between two floor levels. For this piece, I deliberately reversed the image to enhance the suspended moment between the floors, the transition between one experience and the next. Lightbox, analogue durotrans.

The series in its entirety was shown in a solo show titled space encounters (2002) at the Landesgalerie am Oberösterreichischen Landesmuseum and is documented by a catalogue. The main texts by Dr. Martin Hochleitner and Carl Aigner can be found in the section Word. Some of the pieces of the Tate Modern series were first exhibited in the group show species of spaces (2002) at Danielle Arnaud gallery.
